What is website promotion?

What does this term, Promote your Website mean? I am always reading stuff about getting your website on page one of Google or the other search engines, and I do not understand what that means? I always thought that if you needed a presence on the internet, all that you had to do was get someone to throw up a website for you, and people would come a knocking. If that person is you, your website is just an extra expense and it will earn you nothing. Search engines are big business, and the system has been designed to give visibility of any website search on pages , page 1, 2, to infinity. Each page contains only 10 results, website links. You will only appear on page one, the important page if your website is more popular, or is ranked higher than all of the other competing pages. To produce this popularity, your page must first contain excellent content, be competitive and have achieved a ranking high enough to displace other pages eligible for page one display. To do this, the local business website must first be designed properly. It must have a title tag which contains keywords that have a competitive level which you can personally or that you have the financial ability to out promote the competition. This promotion consists of constant change on your website, a sign that your site is alive and vibrant, articles that you write containing good relevant content which link back to your site blogs which do the same, videos containing relevant and interesting content and most importantly links to your site, which indicates the importance or standing of your site.
Website promotion is very much needed to maintain your rank in any search engine search. If you are a Dentist working in the city of Mt Vernon, you can probably make more money having professionals handle your website promotion, then trying to learn this very complicated subject from scratch! I am a local business marketing consultant, so I will try to put up informative articles on this subject from time to time.
