Anacortes WA is the Place to Start a Dentist Local Business If you could search the state as I did in 1994 for the ideal place to retire and a place to start a new Local Business, it has to be Anacortes, WA. I retired in 1992 and spent two years searching for a place to retire that would allow me the amenities of the ocean, including the recreation, the fishing and other seafood bounty, proximity to a bounty of organically grown vegetables and meats, and an industrial base that was not based 100% on anything. I also wanted to be in an area that was culturally strong, and where I could get to a University environment, the opera, the theater and the amenities usually associated with a metropolitan area, without having to live in that area. My wife and I spent two years driving from Blaine, WA, near the Canadian border to the towns on the peninsula, port Townsend, Port Angeles, and dozens more looking for a place that had all of our stated requirements. Only Anacortes filled the bill. It is on an Island, but connected to the mainland by a bridge, no ferry deadlock. It has a vibrant and well diversified industrial base, ranging from having two Refineries, to tourism with an incredible yacht and ocean ship building industry. It is also a high end retirement community of water loving people, who also enjoy the agricultural bounty provided by the Skagit Valley farmlands. It has ferry service to Victoria BC and it is the gateway to the famous San Juan Islands with multiple ferries running every day year round. It has excellent local medical facilities, and is close to the medical giants located in both Seattle and Bellingham.
What does this boil down to? It is a great place to live and to have a local business. It has an affluent society and the amenities of the big city only minutes away by car. This includes university environments both in Bellingham and Seattle. The opera in Seattle and in Vancouver BC, the local cuisine, which is exceptionally good, but also, access the best of Vancouver Canada and Seattle Washington. I love it here.
